Difference Between Architects and Civil Engineers

Whenever you think of giving a physical realization to the idea of a house or building in your mind, you know you need some kind of professional help. The professionals most concerned with construction work are either a civil engineer or architects. Although both professionals work towards one goal, there is a fine line between the natures of both jobs. Civil engineering is a very vast area of engineering and further expands into many other branches which include structural engineering, environmental engineering, water resource engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering and many more. All of these engineers play a very important part in different phases of construction. For example, a geotechnical engineer is required to analyze the ground properties, soil and rock to determine and evaluate the stability of the project. They are also the ones who evaluate the chances and effect of earthquakes on a particular site.

Architects, however, are more concerned over the design and aesthetics of the structure. Although they require a good technical and mechanical knowledge of building and structures as well, their prime focus is the visual appearance and the feel of the structure. Ever wonder how we differentiate an ancient Egyptian temple from a Chinese temple just by looking at them. The pillars, walls and roofs of both structures serve the same purpose but it is the difference of architecture that sets them apart. The architects also need to be well aware of the functionality and practicality of the design. They need to know that the purpose intended to be served by the structure they are designing. They design everything accordingly. The solution they have to come up with has to be practical, functional as well as aesthetically appealing.

Civil engineers use the drafts made by the architects and analyze the most economical and sometimes innovative way to give it a physical existence. They handle more technical details of the project rather than just the design. There prime focus is the construction of the design in such a way that it can bear the maximum weight and force without collapsing. Aesthetics and functionality is not generally their area of concern as it has to be already defined in the architectural designs.

Although architects are the one who initiate the process of construction through their design. They need to work closely with the engineers to give them a clear idea of their vision. Generally, there is only one architect required on a single project but the number of engineers can vary greatly. As mentioned earlier, there are several different types of civil engineers involved in every step of the construction. The number and type of engineers working on a project also change with the type of project. The project can be a building, a bridge, a stadium, roads, dams or a tunnel.

Although both the civil engineers and architects have their own set of responsibilities and abilities, a good mutual understanding and effort is very important for a successful project. For people who are confused about choosing from the two as their field of study should analyze their natural inclinations towards creative works or more technical aspects.

Cover Letter for Engineers

Engineering cover letters are similar in format to general cover letters.  Remember that the cover letter should do more than simply introduce or rehash your resume.  It needs to explain your experiences in a story-like format using the information that is included in your resume.  The cover letter allows you to go into more detail about the important experiences and skills that you have which are pertinent to the job requirements.

Your cover letter needs to include your contact information so that an employer knows how to get hold of you.  Be sure to include your physical address and an email address

Company contact information follows your information.  In this section be sure to list the name and title of the person who is doing the hiring.  If you don't know, call the company or go to the website and get the information.   Sending a letter to an anonymous person generally doesn't work.

In the salutation line, give the name of the person who has the hiring authority.  Do something like this: Dear Mr. /Ms. LastName.  Don't be informal and use a first name.

What follows is the opening paragraph.  In this paragraph tell the name of the specific job for which you are applying and where you learned of the position.  You also need to create a powerful hook in this opening to make the reader interested enough to continue reading the letter.  State your motivation for getting this job or convey your excitement about being able to work for this specific company.  Tell them that you think you are the best candidate for the job.

In the body of the letter you need to demonstrate why your skills and talents make you the best person for the job.  Don't just repeat what is in your resume.  Instead mention specific qualifications that fit the employer's needs.  Give examples of things that you have accomplished to show that you have the ability to meet the job requirements.

At the end of the body, in the closing paragraph indicate that you will follow up.  Further, ask for an interview or say that you are looking forward to the opportunity to talk with the employer in more depth about why you are a good fit for the company and the job.  Offer to schedule a visit and say that you are going to follow up.

Sign off using "Sincerely" or "Respectfully".   Type your full name and be sure to sign the letter in blue ink.

Here is a sample of what a letter for a civil engineer might look like.

This is a good general outline for your engineering cover letter.  It tells why you are sending my resume and how you learned about the job.  It has a powerful hook and suggests you are the perfect person for the job.  It gives examples of projects on which you have worked and shows the results.  It asks for an interview and provides contact information.

Now, all you have to do is sign this in blue ink, send it off and wait for that interview!

Engineers Make Great Inventors

Or is it that inventors make great engineers? Either way, they go hand-in-hand.

Engineers of virtually any specialty get paid to experiment with the technologies of today and add in improvements of their own. In the process, they often create new, useful inventions that may be eligible for a patent.

Engineers invent new technologies for the rest of us.

There are many engineers (otherwise known as inventors) in history. I'm sure you'll recognize the names of a few.

For instance, take Leonardo da Vinci. He drew plans for several flying machines, including a helicopter and a hang glider as well as many military machines. In addition, da Vinci may have made a great civil engineer as shown from his plans for a 720-foot bridge that was recently turned into a reality.

Another engineer/inventor is Eli Whitney. He invented the first cotton gin. Whitney is also credited with the creation of interchangeable parts. Oddly enough, the ability to interchange parts is thought to be a much more important and long lasting invention than the cotton gin (although that is all he is usually remembered for).

Orville and Wilbur Wright, otherwise known as the Wright Brothers are credited with the creation of a practical airplane. They actually wrote a patent application in 1903 which was rejected. Eventually, patent #821,393 for a "Flying Machine" was granted to them in 1906.

Fast forward to today, when inventors are rewarded for their labors with patents that can bring in large sums of money. A large number of the patents awarded today are granted to engineers. And the number of patents applied for keeps growing each and every year in the U.S.

If you choose this career field, you will no doubt be exposed to patents and quite possibly even apply for one yourself. Who knows? You could make history!

Civil Aircraft Engineers and Aircraft Sheet Metal Workers

Metal repair procedures for civil aircraft engineers.

Aircraft mechanics will tell you the airframe of a fixed wing aircraft is generally considered to consist of five principal units; the fuselage, wings, stabilizers, flight control surfaces, and landing gear.

Aircraft principal structural elements (PSE) and joints are designed to carry loads by distributing them as stresses. The elements and joints as originally fabricated are strong enough to resist these stresses, and must remain so after any repairs. Long, thin elements are called members. Some examples of members are the metal tubes that form engine mount and fuselage trusses and frames, beams used as wing spars, and longerons and stringers of metal-skinned fuselages and wings. Longerons and stringers are designed to carry principally axial loads, but are sometimes required to carry side loads and bending moments, as when they frame cutouts in metal-skinned structures. Truss members are designed to carry axial (tension and compression) loads applied to their ends only. Frame members are designed to carry side loads and bending moments in addition to axial loads. Beam members are designed to carry side loads and bending moments that are usually large compared to their axial loads. Beams that must resist large axial loads, particularly compression loads, in combination with side loads and bending moments are called beam-columns. Other structural elements such as metal skins, plates, shells, wing ribs, bulkheads, ring frames, intercostal members, gussets, and other reinforcements, and fittings are designed to resist complex stresses, sometimes in three dimensions.

Aerospace recruitment of technical staff.

Any repair made on an aircraft structure must allow all of the stresses to enter, sustain these stresses, and then allow them to return into the structure. The repair must be equal to the original structure, but not stronger or stiffer, which will cause stress concentrations or alter the resonant frequency of the structure. Stress engineers therefore perform sensitive work. Licensed aircraft engineers carry it out, under the guidance of suitably qualified project engineers, subject to the approval of quality inspection engineers.

All-metal aircraft are made of very thin sheet metal, and it is possible to restore the strength of the skin without restoring its rigidity. All repairs by aircraft sheet metal workers should be made using the same type and thickness of material that was used in the original structure. If the original skin had corrugations or flanges for rigidity, these must be preserved and strengthened. If a flange or corrugation is dented or cracked, the material loses much of its rigidity; and it must be repaired in such a way that will restore its rigidity, stiffness, and strength.

Riveted aircraft structures. Repairs to riveted structures, if they are major structural members, must be specifically approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Extensive repairs to damaged stressed skin on monocoque-types of aluminum alloy structures must be made in accordance with FAA-approved manufacturer's instructions or other FAA-approved source.
